Community Support Volunteers
Our Community Volunteering projects have emerged from our successful Hospice Neighbour service, which since 2014 has seen hundreds of people with advanced illness supported by volunteers in their homes.
Thanks to the Big Lottery Community Fund, over the next three years (2022 – 2025) we are able to expand our community projects, and bring people together to build networks across our communities in Hastings and Rother. Our Community Volunteers are a key part of this project.
Currently we have volunteers offering light touch support remotely and face to face:
Face to face support
Our Hospice Neighbour volunteers are trained and supported to provide help in people’s homes. We match volunteers to people in the community who are living with advanced illness. Our volunteers not only offer a friendly face and the opportunity to connect, they can also help with practical tasks. This can range from helping with a bit of light housework, to walking the dog, getting people out for a coffee in their neighbourhood or having a cup of tea and a chat together.
Our Telephone Befriending project started in summer 2020 when we realised we needed to reach into our community to support people in new ways. We started by linking up volunteers with patients who we knew might be socially isolated because of the pandemic. This then grew to include carers and people who had been linked to our Bereavement Services. This connection was so important at a difficult time in people’s lives made even more challenging due to the pandemic.
As life has slowly returned to being able to connect in person, we are planning to extend our face to face support to include carers. We also want to include people getting back on their feet after bereavement who would like support to re-connect.
As our Community Volunteer projects grow and diversify we will be looking to bring together more and more people across our neighbourhoods in Hastings and Rother.
