What is the role?

Hospice Neighbours is a very special and unique scheme offering practical and emotional support to people in their homes diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.

What will I be doing?

Based on your preferences and the client’s needs, you may provide emotional and practical support in the following areas –

  • Respite for carers support
  • Companionship
  • Light gardening eg clearing an overgrown path to the front door, weeding, planting seeds, watering the garden
  • Grocery shopping eg supporting the client go shopping for themselves of collect groceries on their behalf
  • Dog walking
  • Light household tasks eg putting on a load of washing, vacuuming, hanging washing on the line, cleaning a few dishes
  • Collecting prescriptions
  • Accompanying on short trips/walks
  • Preparing a simple meal eg sandwich, soup, light snack
  • Help with post/phone calls, but not witnessing documents
  • Listening and talking with patients, their families and friends in a caring and sensitive manner
  • Observing a patient’s general condition by monitoring for signs of deterioration and contacting the Hospice Neighbour Officer
  • Immediately contacting our Hospice Neighbour Officer when any issues, incidents or potential safeguarding concerns arise
  • Understanding and demonstrating relevant policies and procedures during your volunteering at St Michael’s Hospice
  • Attending relevant training, support meetings and supervisions as required
  • Submitting your monthly hours.
