I was looking for something to do with my spare time and started as a Reception volunteer, but at the Volunteer Induction l met some of the Lottery team and they said they were looking for volunteers too. I thought that it would be an interesting department to get involved in.
My favourite part about the Lottery role is calling the customers who have had a win, but are very generously donating it back to the Hospice. I phone to thank them for donating to us, and they are always happy to hear from us.
I still volunteer on Reception, so l have two different volunteering sessions during the week, one on the front desk and the other in the Lottery Office. I like knowing that l’ve got something going on each week and that l’m getting up and doing something useful that day.
It had been a while since I’d been back in a proper work environment, so it really boosted my confidence being part of the Hospice, and learning about how it all works. I’ve also gradually become more involved with the Fundraising team, volunteering at events like Open Gardens and Battle Attack, and playing the part of the ‘Pumpkin Witch’ at the Pumpkin Trail. It was such good fun – if l’m going to do something l like to put my heart into it.
